Complications Associated with Dental Extractions

Dec 10, 2019

Dental extraction is a treatment often used for a tooth that cannot be fixed or repaired through any other dental procedure. it is recommended when it is the only lasting and reliable option available. The procedure involves removing a tooth from its socket in the bone. Depending on your specific case, you may have to go through a simple or surgical extraction. Usually, the best way to determine the extraction method to be used is by having an X-ray to assess the state of the tooth. your dentist will also need to be updated on your medical background to see if there are any precautions that need to be taken to account.

You are expected to recover from a tooth extraction procedure a few days after the treatment. Expect some bleeding and thereafter some discomfort and swelling on the affected area. The bleeding should completely stop after an hour while the discomfort and swelling may carry on for 2 to3 days. One week after the procedure you should be feeling much better. However, in some unfortunate circumstances, some patients do not experience a smooth recovery. Instead they are faced with some complications after the treatment that leaves them requiring additional medical care. Some risks and complications associated with tooth removal include;

Bleeding

It is common to experience bleeding after a tooth is removed. This is usually controlled by applying steady pressure on the affected area for the first hour following the procedure. Our Brampton dentist will advise you to bite down on a piece of gauze for at least an hour and the process may be repeated 2 to 3 times depending on your situation. However, if you remove the gauze too soon or frequently to check if bleeding has stopped, it may persist for a few more hours. If nothing seems to ease the bleeding, then the dentist may opt to close the wound with stitches. Taking certain medications such as aspirin may also increase chances of you bleeding for an extended period. Therefore, make sure to mention to the dentist if you are taking anticoagulants or any other medications. You may be advised to temporarily stop taking them or to adjust the dosage a few days before an extraction procedure.

Infection

This is quite a common complication and is characterized by swelling and acute pain 48 hours after the procedure. you may also experience some bleeding. Since the mouth is full of different types of bacteria, an open wound is left susceptible. Usually the dentist will evaluate your case and determine whether you need antibiotics to prevent infections or not. In case the necessary precautions were taken and you still suspect that you may have developed an infection, make sure to notify the dentist immediately.

Dry Socket

When a blood clot does not form on the area that held the tooth or if the clot breaks off too son, then the bone beneath becomes exposed leading to a dry socket. This causes you to experience great pain that may be accompanied by a bad taste in the mouth. to control the condition a medicated bandage will be used to help promote healing on the affected area.

Nerve Injury

Although rare, sometimes the nerve supporting the extracted tooth may be damaged during the removal procedure. This may cause the area to permanently feel numb or tingly. Depending on the extent of damage, you may be given medications or advised on suitable treatment therapies.

Other types of complications include osteoradionecrosis, bite collapse and improper alignment of tooth. Usually, after an extraction, your dentist may recommend further dental work such as dental implants, dentures or bridges. This is usually to ensure that the remaining teeth remain in position even after a removal.
